Besides having some of the most gruesome comics in the business, they also have some amazing covers, and boast the toughest logo in comics.

This is the first Church of Hell comic that I‘ve read. I have a soft spot for all things horror; I love my death metal, horror movies, and yes, horror comics. Zombie comics are a bit different from your run-of-the-mill horror comics. They contain extremely graphic scenes and sometimes, but not always, worry more about the art and shun the story. If the art is good enough, they get away with it and horror geeks will buy them anyway.

My friends in horror, this comic is well worth your money.

Dom Ragnar hasn’t quite lived a wholesome life. He stole his buddy’s girl, they fooled around, did some drugs, and then he murdered his best friend. With his life spiraling out of control, Dom has to decide whether to try and redeem himself for his sins, or accept that he is inherently evil and join with the devil and his church.

In issue #3, Dom has chosen to turn down the priest of the Church of Hell’s offer and take the long road toward redemption. The priest allows him to walk away, but he’s accompanied by a horde of demon-gods that turn his life into a living nightmare. Dom is haunted by diabolical hallucinations which occasionally turnout to be real with catastrophic results to those around him.

Glenn Fabry has penciled some of the most horrific images that I have ever seen in a comic book. I really don’t know how he can sleep with such visions in his head. Then again, maybe that’s why he draws them; to get them out! Glenn has done an extraordinary job of blurring the lines of reality for the reader in Church of Hell. He takes you down the same ghastly path that Dom travels, not knowing what is real and what is an illusion.

Where Fabry tells an extraordinary visual tale, Alan Grant is the twisted mind behind the script. In characteristic extreme-horror fashion, there is no holding back. Grant lays it all out for you. Unlike other extreme-horror comics, this story is impressive and imaginative. No one is infected by a virus or popping out of graves; Dom is living these horrors because of his choices. This concept plays on our worst fears.

I’m telling you now, that if you are the least bit squeamish or enjoy more psychological horror, you should probably stick with a comic like Creepy. The content of this comic is black and vile.  If you are looking for something completely over-the-top and grotesque, Church of Hell is for you.
